2010 Fountain Of Youth Stakes – Eskendereya
Eskendereya shook off Jackson Bend rounding the final turn of the 0000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park and romped home by 8 1/2 lengths under John Velazquez to register his first graded stakes win Feb. 20. Buddy's Saint, the 9-5 favorite among 10 rivals in the 1 1/8-mile test for 3-year-olds, left his race on the first turn when he jostled with Aikenite while attempting to advance through an opening at the rail for jockey Jose Lezcano. Zayat Stables' Eskendereya, a disappointment in last fall's Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) when he finished ninth at Santa Anita, is two-for-two in 2010 for trainer Todd Pletcher. The good-looking son of Giant's Causeway --Aldebaran Light (by Seattle Slew) won a one-turn mile allowance race Jan. 7 at Gulfstream by 1 1/4 lengths. www.bloodhorse.com

I still think he could’ve won the Triple Crown if he hadn’t been injured. Guess it just wasn’t meant to be.
We needed a few good colts in this year’s Triple Crown.

Eskendereya has been retired, dye to an injury.
December 15th, 2010 - 07:43
Eskendereya was scratched from the Derby this morning. Was really hoping to see him make a run at the Triple Crown this year.

@GBeret83
Sidney is my pick this year! Last year it was Papa Clem and he was fourth, so I think I am getting better at picking my horses.
December 15th, 2010 - 08:29
@GBeret83 Great insight, thanks.
December 15th, 2010 - 09:23
@krsfromprp, I think that’s a pretty safe pick as well. From all the Derby prep’s that I’ve seen to date, if Sidney’s Candy handles conventional dirt O.K., he may be the one of very few that is actually strong enough, and that has the stamina needed to run with Eskendereya. I also think, provided that he’s taken back off of the pace, into a stalking position, and saves something for the stretch run, that Rule could possibly have an outside shot at hitting the board as well. TJMO.

@eazilyiapproach, It’s never certain how well, or whether any of these 3yr.old’s are going to be able to get a 1-1/4 in the Kentucky Derby. It’s the first time racing that distance for any of the Derby starters. That’s the one variable that makes it a level playing field for all 20 of them. But, Eskendereya sure made the 1-1/8 in the Wood Memorial look awfully easy. He didn’t, at all, appear to me to be a colt that would’ve had any problem whatsoever going another 1/8 mile. TMO.

@GBeret83 Good call.
December 15th, 2010 - 11:06
My derby pick for 2010. Guess that’s an easy call.
December 15th, 2010 - 12:05
@bra35486, even as good as Eskendereya looked here in the Fountain Of Youth Stakes, it would be hard to call this his best race given the performance that he turned in at Aqueduct in the Wood Memorial. Beating Jackson Bend and Awesome Act rather decisively. And calling it rather decisively may be being kind. IMO.

@ghostzapper2006 — Do you mean Stately Victor?
December 15th, 2010 - 13:27
Overbet fav on derby day who had easy up frot trips with very soft paces back to back in his last 2 wins. Lets see what happens derby day when the fractions are real in the 110 and change range. This horse will be hugely overbet and wont wi Derby day leading a 1:22 and 4 opening 6 panels. lol I’ll bet Stately Warrior finishes ahead of this horse Derby day.
December 15th, 2010 - 14:07
@GBeret83 Eskendereya made it a no-brainer with his romp today in the Wood Memorial. Rule is one tough horse, though, but not on the same class.

Since sweeping the Florida Stallion series at Calder, and also nailing D’ Funnybone at the wire in the Frank Gomez Stakes, as the competition has gotten tougher for Jackson Bend, so has finding the wire first. This was a dominant performance by Eskendereya. I really look forward to seeing Eskendereya and Awesome Act going at each other in the Wood Memorial coming up in April. If both run like Eskendereya did here, and Awesome Act did in the Gotham, it should be an awesome race. IMO.

Will Johnny Velazquez choose Eskendereya or Rule as his 2010 Kentucky Derby mount? Being that Todd Pletcher trains both, and Johnny Velazquez rides both, I’m sure he’ll have his choice of which colt he want’s as his mount for the Derby. This may ultimately, given the talent of both, be a situation like Garrett Gomez had in 2009 riding both Pioneer of The Nile and Dunkirk and having to choose one of the other for the 2009 Kentucky Derby. Ultimately, Gomez chose right.

His beyer was a 106..Hope he didn’t have his best race in February. May get Pletcher over the hump. Lookin at Lucky looks like the real deal though.

@BigBrown2332
Buddy’s Saint was injured, I think in this race, he will not be in the Derby unfourtunately, I liked him too. I like 85ina50 also, but I feel he is a better sprint horse. Esky is a cool horse, I really like him!!!
December 15th, 2010 - 16:12
Looks good here! We’ll see how he handles the 1/8.
December 15th, 2010 - 17:02
This race was the best performance I’ve seen by a three year old this year, but I’m still not giving up on Buddy’s Saint yet. I’m also still hoping Eightyfiveinafifty, will make it to the derby to. But if Eskendereya does well in the Fl Derby, then we’ve got a really talented horse for the derby.
December 15th, 2010 - 17:16
– I was skeptical at first, thought he was really a grass horse. This race and the one before it made a believer of me. But hey, he’s Giant Causeway out of a Seattle Slew mare. What’s not to like?
– Still, the Oaklawn 3 YOs are a better group and the Rebel is shaping up to be the toughest of all the pre-Derby preps. Lookin at Lucky, Conveyance, Dublin, Super Saver, Noble’s Promise and probably Dryfly, etc..
December 15th, 2010 - 18:08
i liked this one from his first race and even more when i found out that he’s by my favorite stallion The Iron Horse Giant’s Causeway i like him for the tripple crown he has a great running style and to me he looks like he’s very versitile he looks like he could run midpack and come off the pace if he has to its jus the way he move to me he runs more like a off the pace horse… this one has yet to show us his best stuff i like him to win the triple crown
December 15th, 2010 - 18:43
Even if Bdy’s Snt would have hald a good race he couldnt have handled Eskendereya in that race. I like Eskendereya in the derby, but their are some others to watch out for
December 15th, 2010 - 18:55
Powerhouse performance.
December 15th, 2010 - 19:11
ill keep my eye on this one
December 15th, 2010 - 19:44
Not really, John doesn’t like the lead, he can go anywhere. Eskendereya just likes to be close to the pace
