How to care for an indoor fountain?

Question by abbacat: How to care for an indoor fountain?
I just bought a used indoor fountain so it did not come with instructions. It's about 3-4 ft tall and works great but I want to keep it that way. Should I buy some sort of cleaner or algae killer? And what should I do to keep the pump working well? Thanks

BTW-Although it is technically "used" it is almost new because the person I bought it from only just bought it but had to sell it because her dog was drinking out of it.

The only cleaner you should need for your fountain is vinegar. That will dissolve any mineral build up in the pump, hoses and water basin.

I have five fountains and have never had a problem with algae growing. After ten years or so, I've only had to clean one of them with the vinegar and water, then I ran clean water through it and dumped that then filled it again.
