Is there a difference between fountain and bottled soda?

Question by surgirn54: Is there a difference between fountain and bottled soda?
We are in a debate over the difference in fountain drinks and bottled drinks. Is one fizzier than the other, thicker than the other, somehow the same but different? What do you think?

  1. canned and bottled beverages are the manufactures perfect mix. when you get drinks from a fountain, two canisters are hooked up to mix the drink, one contains the fizzy soda, the other the syrup that gives it the flavor you chose. the fountain mix depends on the settings, so it can be weaker or stronger than the can. also the fizzy soda can run flat towards the bottom.

can and bottle are always the same for the most part. so i’d hv to say bottle or canned taste better more often than fountain.

  2. I prefer from the fountain. These is a difference, I can’t really explain it.

  3. There is to be no difference when comparing a fountain pop and a can/bottle of pop; however, to make fountain pop, you mix the drink syrup and carbonated water. Sometimes the mix can be off due to mechanical reasons or untrained staff.

  4. Every fountain drink will be different – some will be fizzier, some will be thicker, etc… It is because all fountains will operate slightly differently due to mechanics, conditions of cleanliness and upkeep, etc… Some may output more syrup than others, while some may output more carbonation, or more water. They are probably all set the same, but conditions where they are placed will have them operating differently.

All bottled soda of each brand, for example, Coke, should be the same, as they are made in processing plants that are computer maintained.

  5. Bottled soda comes from the factory pre-packaged and having gone through quality control. While there are some variances in texture and taste (and fizziness) which result from batching issues and also how the soda was kept before it was opened, usually its a pretty uniform product: you know what you can expect.

Fountain soda is syrup mixed with seltzer or local water that is “spiked” with CO2. So the result will actually depend on how the mix is set up. That’s why sometimes a soda may taste stronger or weaker, or with an aftertaste, or thicker or thinner than at other times, even from the same tap. Further, if you are in an area where you don’t want to drink the tap water, I would be really hesitant to suggest you drink the fountain soda.

  6. I’m not sure what the difference is besides taste – but there is one, it used to drive my hubby nuts because I would have him bring me a coke home every day and sometimes he tried to trick me by putting a can / bottle coke in a cup with ice and tell me it was fountain – never worked I could tell right off.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who has noticed a difference as I have been told I’m nuts they are all the same.

  7. fountain is sparkling water mixed with the sugars used to make the soda
same with canned or bottled but fountain is mixed when you press the button

  8. Fountain soda comes from the draft machine that mixes the syrup and soda water Bottled or canned is from the manufacturer.

  9. The fountain drinks vary in fizziness and taste from place to place, but the can and bottled drinks are consistant. I usually prefer predictability unless I’m really craving something different!

  10. I like the fountain drinks better, I hate the ones in plastic bottles but the very best come from a glass bottle.

  11. fountain is warmer
