Take Maintenance Seriously
No matter how good some fountain may look in your yard, if they are not outdoor fountains constructed to withstand the elements, then they are almost certain to suffer from exposure to sun, snow, and ice.  And even the best outdoor fountains, designed for outdoor use, will eventually suffer damage from the elements if they are not properly maintained.  Outdoor fountains can be significant investments, so get into the habit of performing the simple tasks involved in their proper care on a regular basis, and they will last for decades and pay you back a hundredfold.

Cold Weather Protection
If your home is in a part of the country which suffers from long, rugged winters, you will not be as spending many cold-weather hours in your backyard as you do warm weather ones.  So it’s not at all a bad idea to give your outdoor fountains the winter off, by covering their beauty with tarps to keep their surfaces free of ice and snow.  Doing so will allow you to limit the effect so your sub-zero temperatures on your outdoor fountains.

Tarps or other protective covers for your outdoor fountains are not a bad idea at any time of year when you know severe weather is on the way.  You can do some preventative maintenance on your outdoor fountains by limiting the amount of direct sun exposure they get each day when you decide where to install them. But if you will be away for any amount of time, consider covering them, and of course, removing their pumps if possible.  Follow the manufacturers’ instructions concerning the maintenance of the pumps in your outdoor fountains, and along with protecting them with tarps, you will have the two most effective maintenance procedures mastered!
