Q&A: Does anyone have natural and non toxic ways for keeping algae out of a water fountain?
Question by Pinky0460: Does anyone have natural and non toxic ways for keeping algae out of a water fountain?
I have an ornamental fountain in my backyard that my dog likes to drink out of. I need to find a solution to keeping the algae from growing on the fountain. I've used Pond Bloc, but that is toxic to humans and pets. I've also tried Algefix, but that doesn't seem to help. Any ideas?
Thanks!

if the fountain is in direct sunlight algae will grow much faster. Scrubbing it periodically with a soft brush is the most non toxic way. If you also have an aquarium then an algae eating fish may work until it eats all the algae. Most fountains don't have the proper filtration for sustaining fish permanently. Some algae eating fish (e.g. plecostomus) can grow very big also(12 in.)

First, clean the fountain. Take a few stems of fresh cut lavender and a few daylilly leaves and tie them together and put into the fountain. I know it sounds silly, but I do this every summer in my birdbath and it does work.
