Q&A: Help with floor fountain?
Question by Jofhw69: Help with floor fountain?
I've always wanted a floor fountain, but just can't see paying up (or over) ,000 for one, so I decided to go at it myself. There are a few questions I have. The one I'm going to build is going to go into an open basin of water where there will also be a water mister to give a neat effect.
For the back (the part the water runs down), I'm looking at a piece of black plexiglass about 6.5-7ft tall, 3.5-4ft wide. I'm going to pour cement into the bottom of the water basin and place the plexiglass inside of it and let it dry, any other idea for that?
My main question is after I hook up the pump what do I plumb the other end of the pipe to? What do they use to let the water trickle down? And also what would the best way to hide it at the top?
Thanks!
This will be against a wall
By plumb, I mean running tube from the pump to the top.
They make underwater misters.

While I like the idea and fountains, the plumbing issue will be more a challenge than anything else. I have to ask why Plumb it at all? That would be especially true if you don't have it against a wall. A free standing, center of the room fountain only needs to have a water level checked and added to so as not to burn out the pump.
The "plumbing" to create a trickle effect can happen in the base depending on the pump and tubing to where the water is designed to flow down the piece of plexi. That plumbing could be clear or black and/or be framed and hidden up the sides of the plexi.
I'd almost consider clear using two pieces allowing the water to trickle/ run between the two back into the basin. I might also consider some textured plexi for added effect. I'm not at all sure how you could regulate a "mister"
You might investigate the construction and hardware used in the 00 fountain and replicate it in your DIY.

They just use a small trough at the top so that the water pools, make sure the trough is tilted a little so that it doesn’t spill out the back. You can use some rocks just sitting up at the top to hide it. Or if you want a more intricate design build a shadow box on top.
