why do koi jump out of ponds/fountains? i just got mine and 20 minutes later jumped out? will it be okay?
I just got my koi from the pet store, and floated it like I was told. I have had my fountain for two weeks, and tested the water. Everything reads ok.But why after 20 minutes did it jump out? I don't think it was out of the water for very long, when I went out to check on it. What should I watch for? It seems to be swimming ok right now. I covered the fountain tonight til I can get some netting for it.
The water has two small goldfih in it. and it has been running for over two weeks. I even added some good bacteria into the fountain/pond and did all the water treatments needed. so i don't think it is the water.
It is a double barrel with a lining. one pours into the other. I have floating hycintahs and a water plant too.
I did a full test on the water to check everything would .1% above normal be that bad? And my fountain has a plastic lining not concrete.

If he is back in the water than he should be okay. he probably just got carried away exploring his new home. My sister has a huge bubble eye in her pond and he jumps and flops back in all the time. he has friends so I think he is just having some fishy fun.

check your water ,hope it is not new cement,or a new pond ,if it is it will die ,
new pond water must go trough a period of a few weeks at least sometimes more to get properly organic
i usually throw some black compost in and add water plants and duckweed and some leaves or a bale of hay if the pond is big enough .
when the water is golden and when you see insects and water creatures moving from the bottom to the top and back again it is ready for fish
I put some baby alligators in a freshly made pond and they all escaped ran away .i realized what was wrong when all of the shrimp that i had put in were trying to crawl out ,also be very care full not to put too much fish food in a small pond as it will ferment and contaminate the water within hours killing all the fish

It’s a well-known phenomenom and you have to try and keep the water at a level where they can’t jump out completely.
If that is not feasible then I would get some netting. If you visit koi farms they always cover up at night to prevent koi from jumping out when nobody’s about to rescue them.

fish jump out of thei water for a few reasons, the most common being they’re just plain stoopid. the most common cause for a retativley new pond is the following. water ph, water temp, toxins in the water (like lime from the concrete). If your other fish are ok, i would assume its the ph and double check it.
